Meet the Board

  • Melissa Espinoza
    Term: 2019-2024

    Melissa Espinoza was appointed to the Board of Education in July 2019.  She and her husband, Roger have two children currently attending Temple City High School.  Mrs. Espinoza has formerly served two terms as PTA President as well as other PTA Board and chairperson positions and at the PTA Council level.  She was recognized with an Honorary Service Award in 2015.  Professionally, Mrs. Espinoza spent 27 years working in the private sector as a Senior Vice President and Human Resources Manager for Bank of America.  Since 2017, she has been employed by LAUSD as a Supervising Equal Employment Opportunity Investigator in their Office of General Counsel.  Mrs. Espinoza has a passion for positively impacting K-12 education, supporting the development of all students and the engagement of the community in the process.

  • Matt Smith
    Term: 2021-2024

    Prior to being elected in 2018, and re-elected to a four-year term in 2020, Mr. Smith previously served for 15-years on the Temple City Board of Education from1998 to 2013. He and his wife Janet have lived in Temple City for 39 years, and together raised three sons who all received a TCUSD education. Mr. Smith advocates and model’s community involvement and shares your desire that all children have access to a high quality, well-rounded education in a pleasant and safe community. He believes that it is incumbent upon all of us to work together and build trust among our community, employee groups, and our City of Temple City partners. He was also previously involved in numerous Temple City High School volunteer activities including Ramrodders and Band Boosters, PTA, and Grad Nite, to name a few. Mr. Smith received the Golden Oak Award for his service to our community, PTA’s highest honor, in 2009.

  • Mary Sneed
    Term: 2020-2024

    Mrs Sneed was elected to the Board of Education in November 2020. She and her husband Gene are the proud parents of three Temple City High School graduates. After working as an independent Graphic Designer, she started her career in Temple City Schools as a parent volunteer. Recognizing how much she enjoyed working with students, she changed career paths and worked as an instruction aide at Longden Elementary for 5 years. Encouraged by the teachers she worked with, she returned to college and earned her credential. She returned to college again to earn her Masters as a Reading Specialist. Mrs Sneed retired in 2018 after teaching at Longden for 25 years. A longtime community volunteer, she has been involved with PTA, Cub Scout Pack 156, Band Boosters, Relay For Life, and the Temple City Camellia Festival. She is also involved with the Woman’s Club of Temple City and is the Museum Director for the Historical Society of Temple City. As a member of the Board of Education, Mrs Sneed’s goal is to serve as an advocate for all members of our school community: students, staff and families. She wants to encourage more family involvement, while celebrating the many cultures that make Temple City the unique community we are.

  • Vinson Bell
    Term: 2022-2026

    Mr. Bell was recently appointed to an open Board of Trustee seat and he has also previously served one full term from 2013 - 2018. He has been a volunteer within the school community in various capacities for the past 14 years in support of its students, staff and families. TCUSD is a very special place and being a proud alumnus of the district he feels strongly about being able to give back and help pay it forward to the future generations of students. He's honored to have this opportunity to contribute towards its future success.

  • Donna Georgino
    Term: 2022-2026

    Ms. Georgino was elected to the Board of Education in 2018. A proud alumna of Temple City schools and parent to a 2011 TCHS graduate, she is committed to serving the community and helping students succeed. Her previous public service work includes a 25-year career as director of parks and recreation for the City of Duarte. Ms. Georgino seeks to leverage her municipal experience to pursue collaborative agreements with the City of Temple City that are beneficial to the students and community.

About the Board of Education

The Board of Education is the policy-making body for the Temple City Unified School District. It is comprised of five elected members and one appointed student member. Elected board members serve four-year terms and the student member serves a one-year term.

Board Members must be qualified electors residing within the boundaries of the District. Elections are held biennially. Three board members are elected one year. Two years later, two other Board members are elected. The student member is elected by the Associated Student Body of Temple City High School.

Notice Regarding Board Elections

In an effort to consolidate board elections with the statewide general election, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a change that allows the District to hold elections on even numbered years instead of the previously set odd numbered year. Effective November 2018, Board member elections will be held on the first Tuesday, following the first Monday, in November of even numbered years.


NOTICE OF ELECTION 

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN TO ALL QUALIFIED VOTERS in the COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES, STATE OF CALIFORNIA, that an election will be held on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2024, for the purpose of electing the following: 

3 Governing Board Members of TEMPLE CITY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. TRUSTEE AREAS 1, 2 and 3. 

Candidates for the above offices must be registered voters residing within the district or division, if applicable, at the time the declaration of candidacy is issued pursuant to Section 35107 of the Education Code and Section 201 of the Elections Code. 

Declaration of Candidacy forms for the election are available no earlier than July 15, 2024, and no later than Friday, August 9, 2024, at the REGISTRAR-RECORDER/COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE, 12400 Imperial Highway, Norwalk, CA 90650, 2nd Floor, Room 2013, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Appointment to each elective office will be made as prescribed by Section 5328 and 5328.5, of the Education Code and Section 10515 of the Elections Code in the event: 

  1. There are no nominees or there is an insufficient number of nominees for such office(s) and 
  2. A petition signed by 10% or 50 voters in the district or division, if applicable, whichever is the smaller number, requesting that an election be held, has not been presented by 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

Compensation & Benefits

TCUSD's Board members receive a monthly compensation of $240 and the District pays $9,000 towards the cost of health and welfare benefits for Board members. Not all Board members take full advantage of the District's benefit contribution; unused monies are returned to the District's unrestricted General Fund.
